When I was a child my most treasured possessions all fitted snugly in the palm of my hand: a tiny carved figurine of a white wolf; half a walnut shell stuffed with fabric remnants to make a bed for fairies on my windowsill; a small peacock feather found on a walk in the park.
We recapture this sense of wonderment and cherishing as an adult as we gather objects that bring comfort and meaning in our personal spaces. The focus when renovating can be on large, and often expensive, changes and objects, but attention to the tiniest details can often bring about the greatest sense of wellbeing. How many times might you use a very beautiful piece of occasional furniture, compared to how many times a day you touch your light switches? A satisfying tactile experience with something that is inherently beautiful is a tiny gift many times a day.
