The perfect neutral?

Ceramic contemporary rustic country vase from NEXT home

Neutrals are like marmite. Nothing divides the interior decor world more fiercely than a love or a deep and passionate revulsion when it comes to shades of griege.

Personally, I love a neutral. In my home, I use them to create calm and bright spaces against which objects that are meaningful to our family can sing out. These pieces could be colourful quilts, artwork or one of my husband’s 14 guitars (yes, you read that right, I deserve a medal!).

This look has quite a mid-century vibe (check our my Pinterest board, mid-century house for more of these feels) particularly when warmth is added with natural wood tones and colourful textiles.

The same feeling of a cohesive whole which showcases certain pieces can also be achieved with harmonious use of complementary colours. For example a range of deep shades of blue against which reds, yellows and pinks really pop. Delicate light green and turquoise shades are perfect to contrast with arts and crafts patterns such as William Morris fabrics and prints. And who doesn’t love a sunny butter yellow against a soft blue and white Delft tile?

I’m really enjoying exploring more adventurous colour palettes recently. I’m particularly loving this Carnaby Yellow and Piranesi Pink combination by Annie Sloan.

When we moved into our current home I chose neutral tones for my walls and skirting throughout because as well as loving the Scandi vibe that lent to the house it meant we could live in and understand the space before making any big choices. Fast-forward a year and our toddler is resting his sweet little head on my lap to sleep while he’s poorly and though I’m itching to make changes I have a feeling it will be a while until I pick up a paint brush! So for now, I’ll enjoy looking at my gorgeous neutral vase, which I think does the same thing for my flowers as the room does for my art work.

Do you love your neutrals or are you daring with colour? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
